Kensington book club to discuss "Plainsong" Feb. 22Date of Event: Monday, February 22, 2010 – 7 p.m.Title: Book Club – Plainsong by Kent Haruf Kensington Library, 61 Arlington Avenue, Kensington, CA 94707 Free event Contact Information: Louise O’Dea, 524-3043, lodea@ccclib.org Plainsong is a heart strong story of family tribulation and tenacity, set on the High Plains east of Denver. In the small town of Holt, Colorado, a high school teacher is confronted with raising his two boys after their mother retreats into depression. An abandoned teenage girl is pregnant and alone, with nowhere to go. And out in the country, two brothers, elderly bachelors, work the family homestead, the only world they've ever known. From these unsettled lives emerges a vision of life that bind them together – their intertwined fates overcome the powerful circumstances of place and station, their confusion, curiosity, dignity and humor intact and resonant. Book group meetings are normally held on the fourth Monday of every month in the library at 7:00 p.m. Each meeting starts with a poem selected and read by a member with a brief discussion following the reading. New members are always welcome. The Kensington Library is open Mondays and Tuesdays 12 to 8 p.m., closed Wednesdays, open Thursdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 to 5 p.m. Phone number: (510) 524-3043.
