Teams, sponsors needed for El Cerrito's June 24 and 25 Relay for Life
WHAT: Relay For Life is an exciting and meaningful community event that
benefits the American Cancer Society. Teams of 8 - 12 members are formed
from companies, schools, clubs, and other organizations to walk, run or
roll (wheel chairs) in relay fashion for 24 hours around the track of
a local school. Teams camp out in the center of the field and enjoy a
day and night filled with music, food, entertainment, contests, ceremonies
to honor cancer survivors, educational activities and much more! It's
about fun, and about taking up the fight against cancer right here in
our community. This is the 1st Annual Relay For Life event for the communities
of Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito and Kensington. The event is organized
and produced entirely by local volunteers on behalf of the East Bay Region
of the American Cancer Society. The goal this year is for 18 teams and
$15,200.
WHY: Cancer is a major public health problem that effects 1 out of 2
men and 1 out of 3 women. Over 130,000 Californians will be diagnosed
this year. While more people are surviving cancer than ever before, the
survival rate is still only 53%. Relay For Life is the national signature
event of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life began in 1985 when
a Tacoma Washington physician decided to walk a track for 24 hours to
raise money for cancer research. Today the event has grown to over 2,800
events nationwide and will raise more than $175 million for cancer research,
services and education. There are 80 Relay For Life events in California
this year. By supporting El Cerrito's Relay For Life, we can make a difference
in the fight against cancer.
CEREMONIES: The Relay For Life opens as cancer survivors walk, run or
wheelchair the first lap. Cancer survivors from all over the community
are encouraged to join us in a celebration of their victory. This is an
emotional time and sets the stage for the importance of each participant's
contribution. The Luminary Ceremony is another highlight of the event.
The ceremony is held after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember
those who have lost their battle against cancer. These luminaries line
the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants
of the incredible importance of their contribution.
WHEN: Relay For Life begins at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 24th and the
fun progresses non-stop for 24 hours, concluding on Sunday, June 25th
at 10:00 am. A participant from each team is required to be on the track
at all times.
WHERE: Track at El Cerrito High School
HOW: There is a $150 team registration fee and each team member is asked
to raise a minimum of $100 in donations. (Early bird offer: register by
5/15/00 and pay $100 for registration). Many incentive prizes are available
for individuals who raise the most money and each participant will receive
a collectors edition t-shirt. Please join us in the fight against cancer
by becoming a participant in the Relay For Life. For more information,
please contact the East Bay Metro Unit office at (510) 832-7012 x325.
