Cerrito Creek work party Saturday

To: Friends of Five Creeks
From: Susan Schwartz, president

Hope lots of you can help clear and cut up the tangle of brush and ivy along
lower Cerrito Creek starting at 10 am this Saturday, August 25. Meet at
Creekside Park (the south end of Belmont Street) in El Cerrito; bring work
gloves and clippers if you have them. This is a first step in re-planting
with natives and creating a creekside trail and picnic area adjacent to
Pacific East Mall, opposite Albany Hill. We need to clear as much as possible
with volunteer help, to stretch limited funds. (Good news -- a $100,000 Bay
Trail grant has been approved to plan a trail from the Ohlone Greenway down
along Cerrito Creek, with a connection to the Bay Trail.)

More thanks, volunteer opportunities, and news:

--Thanks to Dan Gluesenkamp for building two yard-square frames with
sprinkler systems on timers, so we can start propagating some of the natives
we need for restoration. I'll be in touch with those of you who signed up to
help with propagation; if others are interested, please let me know.

--Thanks to Richard Schwartz for spotting a sewage leak along upper Cerrito
Creek. The City of Berkeley found a tree that had fallen on a temporary line
and fixed the problem, but the steep canyon needs continual monitoring.

--Thanks to organizer Chris Kent and everyone who helped with the GPS mapping
project on Cerrito Creek, a vital first step in Contra Costa County's
watershed mapping project.

--Is anyone available to document historical sites along our creeks, for
listing in various registers so that we can get eventual funding for signage,
booklets, etc.?

Hope to see you Saturday!

Susan Schwartz

P.S. Friends of Five Creeks is an all volunteer citizens group affiliated
with the Urban Creeks Council of California. We depend on donations for all
routine expenses. We ask $10 voluntary "dues." Please send checks made out to
"Friends of Five Creeks - U.C.C." to BC Capps, Treasurer, 2139 Prince St.,
Berkeley, CA 94705.
