Art bench dedication Friday

El Cerrito artist Emily Duffy is putting the finishing touches on what she hopes is just the first of many new public art projects in town. Riders of the #15 AC Transit bus will be familiar with her canvas: the bus bench in front of the ever-popular Fat Apple's restaurant on Fairmount Avenue in El Cerrito.

Duffy has transformed the bench into a piece of stationary art that matches her well-known art car, the "Mondrian Mobile," which she painted in 1996. Duffy's art car--and now the bus bench--incorporates the basic design elements of white, black, primary colors, straight lines, and angles characteristic of Piet Mondrian's later work.

On Friday morning, at 9:30, El Cerrito Mayor Mark Friedman will officially dedicate the Mondrian Bench. Emily Duffy--a former fashion designer--will be attired in a Mondrian dress and accessories of her creation, and her art car will be parked nearby. AC Transit Director Miriam Hawley will also be in attendance, along with other city and transit officials and staff. Members of the community are invited to attend.

Emily Duffy donated over 60 hours of her time to paint the bench and the top of the nearby trash can. With 7 coats of high-quality billboard enamel paint--purchased with donations--the bench is painted to withstand a lot of wear and tear. As a regular customer at Fat Apple's, Duffy will be checking up on the bench frequently, and is prepared to touch it up as needed.

The project is sponsored by Sustainable El Cerrito, a 6-year-old group that promotes community economic development, creek and green space restoration, and urban design that welcomes pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit users along with automobiles. The group is working on plans for other bus benches in town, and welcomes inquiries from artists, as well as community groups, businesses, or individuals interested in sponsoring a bench.
