Seniors give East Bay health plan high marks

For the second year in a row, members gave a local health plan the highest ratings statewide in three important health-related categories. The plan also improved in two areas so that it scored highest in the state for ability to get needed care and for having doctors who communicate well. The Contra Costa Health Plan (CCHP), which has over 55,000 members living or working in Contra Costa County, was recently evaluated in an annual national survey conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The survey was designed to rate the experiences of seniors enrolled in Medicare+Choice organizations. For the second year in a row, respondents from CCHP’s SeniorHealth membership gave the Plan the highest ratings statewide for their personal doctors, the health care they received and their overall experience with CCHP. CCHP was not ranked below the statewide average in any of the 11 categories measured by the survey.

“I was especially pleased with our improved ranking in patients’ ability to get needed care and doctor communication,” says Milt Camhi, Chief Executive Officer of CCHP, which is operated by the county. “The high rating means our providers are working with patients to be sure the patients understand their treatment plans and are getting the care they really need.”

Seventeen Medicare+Choice managed care organizations in California participated in the survey, conducted from September 2001 through February 2002. Survey results are available to the public online at www. medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. “I applaud the hard work and dedication of our staff that has resulted in this tremendous achievement,” said William Walker, M.D., Director of the Contra Costa County Health Services. “This report reflects their continued commitment to service excellence.”

CCHP, a federally qualified HMO founded in 1974, was the first County-sponsored plan in the nation to serve Medicare beneficiaries. For more information, contact the CCHP Marketing Department at 1-800-211-8040.
