Flu shots available starting Oct. 16, Nov. 6 in El Cerrito
With the flu season just around the corner, county health officials are encouraging residents 50 years of age or older, as well as those of any age who have a long-term health condition such as heart or lung disease, diabetes or asthma, to get themselves immunized against the flu.
Beginning October 16, Contra Costa Public Health is making flu shots available at senior centers and other locations throughout the county. The flu shots cost five dollars, although no one will be denied if they’re unable to pay.
“Each year around 20,000 people in the U.S. — most of them over 65 years old — die from the flu. A flu shot protects most people from the flu, and the best time to get a shot is in October or November,” says Dottie Langthorn of Contra Costa Public Health Communicable Disease Programs.
According to Langthorn, no vaccine is 100% effective. “However, if you get a flu shot but still get the flu, you are likely to be far less sick than you would have been without the protection,” she adds.
Langthorn says that people who are in good health should get a flu shot if they are concerned about staying healthy throughout the flu season. Persons with allergies to eggs or who are ill with fever should not get flu shots without consulting their doctors.
