Students, professionals play at March 31 "Jazz Explosion" at Portola
The Portola Middle School Jazz Band is hosting "Jazz Explosion," a jazz performance of middle school music students accompanied by a host of Bay Area professional jazz musicians, at Portola Middle School on Monday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m.
The program will help raise funds for the school's jazz and other music programs to purchase instruments, sheet music and fund school music program activities. Performing at the event and joining Portola's Jazz Workshop and Jazz Band will be several local jazz musicians.
* Mary Fettig on alto saxophone, has played with Stan Kenton, Marion McPartland, Marcos Silva, and was lead woodwind player for the San Francisco Production of Phantom of the Opera during it's 5-year run. She teaches at Diablo Valley College and College Park High in Pleasant Hill.
* Frank Martin, keyboards, has played with Stevie Wonder, Robben Ford, Al Jarreau, Whitney Houston, Angela Bofill, Narada Michael Walden, John Handy, and Sting at Live Aid. Martin teaches at the Jazz School in Berkeley and is active in community music programs.
* Cindy-Browne-Rosefield, bass, has performed with Michael Wolff, drummers Mel Lewis and Jeff "Tain" Watts, and performs at Bay Area clubs and shows. As an educator, she has presented sessions at the local and state level for the California Music Educators Association and is a popular adjudicator for local jazz festivals.
Leading the event will be Portola Middle School's music director, Paul Yonemura, who is also a jazz percussionist. Yonemura has played with John Handy, Michael Wolff, Jimmy Heath, Art Van Damme, Bobby Shew, John Faddis and the Don Piestrup Big Band.
