Pete Sarna named interim police chief
City Manager Gary Pokorny has named Peter Sarna as interim
police chief. He will serve until a permanent replacement is selected,
a process Pokorny expects to take four to six months.
Sarna retired in December 1998 after a 30-year career in
East Bay police work. Immediately prior to retiring, he was assistant
general manager for public safety with the East Bay Regional Park District.
He spent 20 of his years in law enforcement with the Oakland Police Department.
He has a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree
in criminology.
"I have every confidence that Chief Sarna's experience
and education have well prepared him to provide outstanding leadership
for the men and women of the El Cerrito Police Department," said
Pokorny.
"I thank the men and women of our Police Department
for continuing to provide excellent, responsive service to residents of
El Cerrito, to businesses in El Cerrito and to visitors to our community.
"We have become accustomed to excellent Public Safety
service in El Cerrito. Our first-rate police service generates trust and
respect in response. We truly appreciate this service and thank the men
and women who provide it."
Former Chief Linda Fellers left effective Sept. 1, 1999.
Fellers said she left at the request of Pokorny but was unsure why she
was asked to leave. Pokorny said he could not give specifics because it
is a personnel manner.
