Cole named chairperson of countyís Economic Opportunity Council

Mr. Stacy Cole is the new chairperson of Contra Costa Countyís Economic Opportunity Council (EOC). The EOC serves as the major advisory group to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors in the planning and delivery of various services to low-income individuals and families in the county.

Mr. Cole is a local businessman and a former fireman. He is very supportive of family self-sufficiency issues. While he was a Head Start parent, he also served as the Head Start Policy Councilís chairperson.

Currently, there are seats available representing the low-income and private sectors on the EOC. Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the evening. Council members also serve on sub-committees or task forces.

Background:

Organized under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, the Contra Costa County Economic Opportunity Council (EOC) is advisory to the Contra
Costa Board of Supervisors (BOS) and the Contra Costa County Community
Services Department (CSD) in community action related matters pertinent
to CSD and the community. The BOS are the legal and fiscal agents for
the agency. The EOC acts as the advisory body that makes program recommendations to the agency and the BOS. The EOC is a tri-partite body
with representation in the Private, Public and Low-income sectors of
Contra Costa County.

The Community Services Department of Contra Costa County is the Community Action Agency for the County. The Department also provides comprehensive quality services to low-income families with children from birth to six years of age, including services to pregnant women. These services include pre-school education, health and dental services, mental health/disabilities programs and support for family members acquiring job skills in the CalWORKs program. Families also have access to such programs as the Home Energy Assistance Program.
