West Contra Costa teachers of the year selected

Bryan Brandow and Lisa Madigan Selected as WCCUSD Teachers of the Year

The West Contra Costa Unified School District has named the winners of the 2006 Teacher of the Year Awards. The 2006 Elementary Teacher of the Year is Chavez Elementary’s Bryan Brandow, and the 2006 Secondary Teacher of the Year is Helms Middle School’s Lisa Madigan. Mr. Brandow and Ms. Madigan will move ahead as candidates for the 2006 Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year Awards, which will be presented by the Contra Costa County Office of Education at its awards banquet on September 21, 2006. The Board of Education recognized the two teachers with a plaque presentation at its regularly scheduled meeting on May 17.

Bryan Brandow, an eight-year veteran at Chavez Elementary School, is the school’s fifth-grade Alternative Primary Language teacher. As a high school student he spent his summers volunteering with Amigos de Las Americas, a nonprofit organization founded in 1965 that provides high school and college students opportunities to work on community development projects in Latin America. He later received his bachelor’s degree in international studies at Boston College. He moved to the East Bay with his fiancee (now his wife), who was studying at U.C. Berkeley, and earned his teaching credential at Cal State Hayward. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in education, also at Cal State Hayward.

Lisa Madigan has been teaching in the West Contra Costa Unified School District for four years, and has been in the teaching profession for a total of 11 years. As an undergraduate she pursued liberal studies, concentrating her energies on the field of early childhood education, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Cal State Hayward. She later pursued her teaching credential at the same university, and began her teaching career at St. Joseph’s School in Pinole. Ms. Madigan spent seven years at St. Joseph’s before moving on to Helms Middle School, where she currently teaches the sixth grade.

“We’re proud to say that we have such exceptional teachers in our district,” said Interim Superintendent Cynthia LeBlanc. “Congratulations to Lisa and Bryan-they’re a credit to the teaching profession, and our students are fortunate to have them in the classroom.” For more information about the Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year awards please call (925) 942.3388, or go to http://www.cccoe.k12.ca.us/supe/toy.html#about.
