Celebrate Arts Day in El Cerrito
The City of El Cerrito encourages residents to celebrate California Arts Day at a variety of local events on Friday, October 5, 2007 and throughout the month of October.
The City is compiling a list of activities featuring music, theater, visual art, dance and film events in El Cerrito. The guide will be available on Monday, October 1, 2007 at the Community Center, City Hall, participating venues and online at the City’s website, www.el-cerrito.org. The guide will include a brief description of the art featured as well as a map highlighting the participating stores and venues.
City Councilmember Sandi Potter says “The El Cerrito Arts and Culture Commission is working very hard to celebrate California Arts Day which is recognized throughout California on the first Friday in October or October 5th year. Everyone is invited to celebrate the arts, music, dance and creativity”.
The kick-off celebration will be on Friday, October 5 at the MC gallery on San Pablo Avenue. MC Gallery will host their third annual California Arts Day Gallery event featuring photography, water color, and mixed-media pieces, along with food, dancing and live music by harpist Angel Simmons.
The El Cerrito Arts and Culture Commission has coordinated other events on subsequent Fridays in October in other local galleries and the El Cerrito Art Association will be showing work at various locations around the City of El Cerrito during October.
Other highlights include:
· Katie’s Dance Studio, on San Pablo Avenue, will open rehearsals to the public on Friday, October 5.
· Jenny K, a unique gifts & home accessory store located on Stockton Avenue, will host a “meet the artist” event on Friday, October 5 with local jewelry designer Kate Peterson. Attendees can also enjoy acoustic music by husband-wife duet Jack and Sharyl Gates, as well as view works by Scott Meadows next door at Well Grounded.
· The Contra Costa Civic Theatre, one of only three live performing arts organizations with permanent homes in West Contra Costa County, is currently showing “Rumors” a hilarious farce by America's premier comic playwright, Neil Simon. The show runs through October 14. Discounted tickets are available for children age 16 & under.
Karen Pinkos, staff liaison to the Arts and Culture Commission says, “This event is a wonderful way to celebrate our local artists. Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend as many arts events as possible and to bring along family members and friends.”
California Arts Day is an annual, statewide event to recognize the role that arts play in California. California Arts Day is always on the first Friday of October. The theme this year is "California Comes Alive with the Arts.”
