Kensington library book club meets Dec. 29
Please join the Kensington Library Book Club. The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 29, 2008, (Note date change from our normal 4th Monday) at 7:00 PM at the Kensington Library, where we will discuss The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. Hamid's book is an intelligent, absorbing 9/11 novel, written from the perspective of a young Pakistani whose sympathies, despite his fervid embrace of America, lie with the attackers. After the attack, Changez is subject to scrutiny and physical threats, and his co-workers become less affable as he lets his beard grow. Changez, upset by his adopted country's "growing and self-righteous rage," slacks off at work and is fired. Changez comes off, however, as honest and thoughtful, and Hamid handles him with a sympathetic grace.
Book group meetings are normally held on the fourth Monday of every month in the library at 7:00 PM. Each meeting starts with a poem selected and read by a member with a brief discussion following the reading. New members are always welcome. The Kensington Library is located at 61 Arlington Avenue, Kensington. The library is open Mondays and Tuesdays 12 to 8 p.m., closed Wednesdays, open Thursdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 1 to 5p.m. and Saturdays 10 to 5 p.m. Phone number: (510) 524-3043.
