West County School Watch, Aug. 25: Support for Measure M grows

West County School Watch
August 25, 2000

Glen Price

As reported last week, on August 2, 2000 our school board placed a $150
million school bond measure on the November ballot designed to rebuild and
renovate our local elementary schools.

Since that time, support has been rapidly coalescing around the campaign
which needs to garner 66% of the vote to be successful in November. The
campaign committee, "For the Children of West County," is being co-chaired by
Gary Bell, Richmond City Council, and John Dalrymple, Contra Costa Central
Labor Council, and is actively seeking support of all kinds for the campaign
effort.

Last week Dion Aroner and Tom Torlakson, members of the California State
Assembly representing our school district, endorsed the measure.

On August 22, the Bayside Council PTAs and the El Cerrito Democratic Club
also endorsed the bond.

If you would like to add your voice to the campaign, please see the
committee's web site at www.childrenofwestcounty.com . (Many thanks to Castro
Elementary teacher and district parent Betty Buginas for volunteering to
spend some of her precious summer hours designing the web site.) Call me at
(510) 528-1315 if you would like us to mail you a campaign info packet.

painted school. (Verde Elementary school is located in North Richmond at
2000 Giaramita St.)

Player Focus Group this Saturday

School board member Patricia Player will lead a focus group on education
Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the El Cerrito Methodist
Church on Stockton Avenue, near Richmond Street in El Cerrito.

Topics will include the long-range facilities report, Measure M, the budget,
charter schools and any other topics parents, students, and other community
members want to discuss.

For information call Player at 524-9789.

Back to School!

Hard to believe but summer is almost over. Administrators and teachers are
already hard at work getting their classrooms and programs ready. All
district schools except El Cerrito High School begin classes on Tuesday,
August 29. (El Cerrito High School begins on Monday, August 28.) Good luck
and best wishes to everyone for a fantastic school year!
