LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Half Cent Can Make a Whole Lot of Difference for Our Services

Half Cent Can Make a Whole Lot of Difference for Our Services

Measure R is a half-cent sales tax being put before the citizens of El Cerrito as a way for the city to maintain it's services. The City has spent our tax money wisely. When the City started adding more police officers to the force, crime dropped by 30%, no easy task in this day in age with serious crime in neighboring cities on the rise. Compared to hundreds of other cities, our city has managed our money wisely, but with tax revenues down and State raids, the city is forced with a tough decision, slash services or allow the citizens to vote on a solution.

Measure R is a good solution. The half-cent tax doesn't apply to the purchase of food or medicine, and when neighboring cities shop in El Cerrito for products and services, El Cerrito will reap the benefits because all of the moneys gained from the tax will stay in El Cerrito. If the tax doesn't pass, cuts will be made to, childcare services, senior programs, park maintenance, rapid 911 response, reduced police staff and El Cerrito's fabulous events that everyone has enjoyed for years. It will take only a half-cent sales tax to keep our city whole and healthy.
